Using The Right Text Format for SEO
12.10.09
One of the commonly overlooked aspects of SEO is using text format for SEO. By using specific tags and formatting techniques you are essentially highlighting particular pieces of information on your page as the most important and relevant. However, there has been some debate as of late whether or not using text formatting can improve your results and rankings.
As most of us understand, almost every aspect or tactic of SEO comes with its own fair share of criticism or speculation these days. That’s because these strategies are always changing and the way that they are viewed or used or always changing as well. In order to succeed with SEO over the long haul therefore you need to always be aware of changes.
When people talk about using a specific text format for SEO they are referring to ways of highlighting certain material to make it more prominent. This highlighting will literally highlight content visually on a page to actual visitors, but what is really meant is how the search engines view the tags.
The highest or most important level of formatting that you can use on a webpage is the main heading tag, h1. This is where you put the title of your webpage, and whatever is in that tag is recognized as being the most important information that you have on any particular page. Therefore it makes sense that by including a keyword or two into your h1 tag you are then highlighting that keyword as extremely important to the webpage in question.
This works similarly for the h2 tag, used to denote a subhead. If you highlight your most important key phrase on a page with the H1 heading, you can then try to target a few additional phrases with your H2’s that appear later on in the content. The heading tags grow less important the higher the number, and generally speaking after H2 or H3 there isn’t much value in using them at all besides for the specific aesthetic differences of your layout.
Besides the headings that you use on your page, there are other text format for SEO options. One of these is marking a particular phrase, word or sentence as bold. However, the b tag just makes text bold, without adding any significance. What does add value and meaning to a phrase or word is the use of the strong tag. This will produce the same bold look but the strong tag adds to it an implied meaning of importance as well.
These are the main ways that you can use text format for SEO within your web pages. As mentioned the world of SEO is always changing and nothing is guaranteed. Many people are already thinking that this highlighting of information is no longer completely effective. However it certainly won’t do anything negative to your positioning, and until it’s completely proven to be ineffective it makes sense to implement whenever possible.
